Welcome to Ingredient of the Month, where we explore a great, fresh, natural ingredient produced by Mother Earth herself. This month, we are exploring Manuka Oil.

What Is Manuka Oil?

Manuka oil is a soft oil that is harvested from the manuka leaves and flowers via distillation. The shrub is indigenous to New Zealand and has been used in herbal medicine for centuries. The Maori have used this oil for skin conditions, burns, and even rheumatism as it’s naturally antifungal and antiseptic.

You’ve probably never heard of this oil before as it’s typically pretty hard to find in physical store locations. If you want a better shot at finding it, go online to Amazon or go to your local health food store.

The leaves, flowers, branches, and roots of the manuka plant are all used for different purposes; sometimes, it’s even put into food to heal the toxic body from the inside out.

Skin Benefits of Manuka Oil

Manuka oil is often put into skincare products. The oil is extremely cleansing, which is why you may find it in natural cleansers for oily to combination skin. The oil pulls out extra sebum from the pores, resulting in fewer breakouts, clearer skin, and unclogged pores without any rough abrasions as you would get from exfoliation or a chemical peel.

Manuka oil is also frequently used as an acne treatment. As we mentioned above, manuka oil has extremely strong cleansing properties. Additionally, the oil is extremely soothing and is often used as a redness reducer on inflamed skin, acne, or pores.

This is because the oil soothes the inflammation at the source of the problem and shortens your breakouts. Manuka oil is extremely antimicrobial, which attacks Propionibacterium acnes. These types of acne are usually harder to treat and most people don’t even realize they have it.

Manuka oil stops UV-B-induced production of inflammatory cytokines and the infiltration of macrophages which in turn leaves the body freshly cleansed and ready to work.
