This month we are going to dive into one of our favorite clean beauty ingredients: Sea Buckthorn Berries. If you’ve never heard of these berries before, it’s high time you did! The Sea Buckthorn berry boasts an alarming amount of vitamin C, excellent anti-aging properties and skin-healing benefits. Read on for all the details!

What Are Sea Buckthorn Berries, Anyway?

Sea Buckthorn Berries come from a rather inhospitable mountainous and coastal-living bush, complete with 2 inch long thorns to protect itself. Difficulty in accessing the plant as well as the labor intensive removal of the berries is the reason it’s not only uncommon to see berries in your local market, but also the reason oils and other products containing sea buckthorn berries tend to be rather expensive.

And it’s not just the berries themselves who are brimming with nutritional and medicinal goodness- in fact, the leaves, flowers, seeds, and berries of sea buckthorn are all used for a variety of applications both inside and out.

Skin Benefits of Sea Buckthorn Berries

But let’s talk about skin, shall we? Used topically, balms, salves or oils infused with sea buckthorn berries can have amazing benefits for the skin and hair. Sea Buckthorn Berries have a particularly high antioxidant content, which is helpful when it comes to allowing skin to repair and regenerate itself as well as correcting and preventing environmental damage.

We’re talking anti-aging benefits to allow the cells to regenerate faster, protect themselves from UV damage, and prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The bright orange color of the berries themselves is an obvious ode to the fact that they are bursting with carotenoids – that which gives them their gorgeous orange pigment and when it comes to skin, helps improve brightness and tone, as well as elasticity and firmness.

Sea buckthorn’s omega-7 and omega-3 fat content works topically to reduce inflammation (especially after a little too much sun exposure), can help wounds heal more quickly and even reduce scarring.

Finally, sea buckthorn berries contain B vitamins, B12 in particular, which can help regulate sebum production, something especially helpful for those of us with oily or acne-prone skin. The oil itself is of course great for dry, coarse, damaged or sunburned skin.
