DIY Sunday: Soothing Tub Tea
Happy Sunday, mamas! We’re back with an ultra-luxurious yet deceptively easy DIY recipe for you this week.
Who’s up for a nice hot bath?
I know I am!
One of the ultimate self-care treatments, a hot bath not only relaxes your body and mind, it also can help ease your breathing, relax your nervous system, and balance your mood and hormones. A soothing soak in the tub can truly be an experience.
This week’s DIY recipe is a way to level up your bath time experience with a tub tea!
Refreshing, cooling, invigorating- there aren’t enough adjectives to accurately describe an herbal bath experience!
Never heard of a tub tea?
No worries!
They are super simple to make, easy to customize for your personality or skin conditions and boast some major skin benefits to boot! You probably already know some of the benefits of drinking tea – it is full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, immune boosting benefits, and more.
Here’s the cool part: since your skin is the largest organ in your body, you can literally soak up all of those benefits by adding some tea to your bath! Much like tea for drinking, you’ll choose the herbs that make up your tub tea based on their particular qualities and let them steep in the water before you get in.
You can choose herbs based on their healing, soothing, moisturizing abilities; on their benefits for relaxation or promoting sleep; on their ability to relieve sore muscles or even to stimulate and recharge your senses.
With those ideas in mind, here are a few mixtures you might try:
1- Soothing / Healing: Great for dry skin, sunburned skin, itchy or inflamed skin, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, etc. This blend is perfect for promoting relaxation while also moisturizing and soothing your skin.
Ingredients: Chamomile, Plantain Leaf, Rose Petals, Calendula, Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, Ground Oats, Goats Milk Powder. **Can be made Vegan with Coconut Milk Powder instead**
2- Relaxing / Sleep Promoting: This is the blend to try if you need to seriously unwind! Run this bath before bedtime to help sleep come a bit more easily.
Ingredients: Lavender, Rose Petals, Chamomile, Passion Flower, Ground Oats, Coconut Milk Powder.
3- Stimulating / Rejuvenating: Wake up! Get your butt in gear, clear your head, awaken those senses and get it together! If you need to be on top of your game, feeling refreshed and ready to go- then this is the blend for you.
Ingredients: Matcha Green Tea Leaves, Peppermint, Dried Lemon Slices, Dried Orange, Epsom Salts, Lavender.
4- Sore Muscle: Soak in this bath after a great workout, a long, exhausting day at work, or whenever your tired body is in need of some extra relief.
Ingredients: Peppermint, Juniper Berry, Epsom Salts, Comfrey Leaf, Chamomile, Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, Rosemary.
5- Congestion Relieving: Relax and unclog your chest and sinuses with this congestion relieving blend.
Ingredients: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Elderberry, Juniper Berry, Ground Oats.
You can make a big batch of tea and store it in a glass jar and transfer to your cheesecloth or muslin bag just before using.
What You’ll Need:
- Glass Jar (any size you already have on hand will work)
- Muslin Bag(s) or Cheesecloth
- Herbs of Choice – enough to fill jar!
To Make:
Mix your herbs/powders/ingredients of choice and transfer to your glass jar. Store in a cool, dry location away from sunlight.
To Use:
Scoop tea into muslin tea bag and draw closed. Place bag directly in HOT bathwater and allow to steep. Squeeze contents of bag to release or for extra herbal power: bring about 1 quart of water to a boil, remove from heat, and steep bag directly in boiling water. Transfer water AND tea bag to bathtub and allow to cool before getting into tub.
Discard herbs after use and allow muslin bag to dry before reusing.
